If You See Kay Red Blend

“If You See Kay” is a really fantastic concept brought to you by the same people responsible for Layer Cake.  The label shows a rock and roll girl in her car that sports a stick-shift with a skull.  If you go to the website, it explains that Kay is the embodiment of a lifestyle, a “wide open throttle or don’t bother doing it at all.”

There’s even a hashtag for where you find Kay, #ifyouseekaywines.

I love it and I haven’t even opened the bottle yet.

This wine, believe it or not, is a red blend from Lazio, Italy.  The 2013 blend is 80% Cab, 10% Petit Verdot, 5% Syrah, and 5% Primitivo.

When you pour, it’s dark.  So dark you can’t see through it.

Now I’m even more excited about this wine.

The nose adds to the beauty.  Heavy, full, and ripe.  It’s full of blackberries, earth, and a touch of chocolate.  Imagine being in Italy.  They’re plowing up dirt in a field and your grandma has just baked a blueberry cobbler that she’s serving with fresh hot chocolate.  That’s what this wine smells like.  And there’s a soft rain falling to heighten the scent of earth.

The flavor is every bit as heavy as I imagined.  There’s a whisper of sweetness from the blackberries but nothing I wouldn’t drink.  That tiny bit of sweetness plays nicely with the chocolate flavor on the nose earlier.

This is another wine I love.  Big, bold, heavy, and full of flavor.  I tested this wine with steak.  Stick with something big and bold.  This wine isn’t wimpy.  Don’t drink with desert – you’ll miss half the beauty of this wine.
