Storyteller Merlot: Once Upon a Dream
Once upon a time, there was a magical kingdom where all
wines were amazing, none of them tasted over produced, and no calories were
gained as long as you drank a glass every night at dinner. There was the “Champagne Fairy” who left
bottles of bubbly next to your pillow after a rough day at the office and the
White Witch of the North cast a spell over the land to make all the white wines
not too sweet, not to acidic, but just right.
Sadly, we don’t get to live in that world. We live in a world where bad wines happen
despite our best efforts. In our world,
the Dark Forest (otherwise known as the grocery store wine section) can tempt
us with beautiful looking fruit that is rancid once you bite into it.
I’m a fan of the Storyteller label. I love the Pinot Noir (Into the Fog). But, if the Pinot Noir is the hero of the
fairytale, this Merlot is the evil stepsister.
There’s a fakeness to the flavors of this wine that make me
feel it is overproduced. The raspberry
and cherry flavors have overtones of medicine.
It’s like you’re drinking a wine version of Robitussin that slightly
burns on your tongue and makes you wonder if you need to have a cough to drink
this wine.
Hard pass on this wine.
There are much better Merlots at this price point that don’t taste like
cough syrup.
