I enjoy my Georgia wines.
Some are good, some are not, but I love supporting local farmers. This winery isn’t in my normal “regular
visit” area of Georgia. Habersham Winery
is northeast of my usual haunt (the Dahlonega Plateau) near the tourist town of
Helen.
If you ever visit Georgia, you should plan a visit to
Helen. In the summer, make time to tube
down the river. The town is built to
look like a Bavarian escape from Georgia with German inspired restaurants,
bakeries, tourist shops, and even mini golf.
It’s a fun little spot surrounded by lots of hiking and two decent
wineries. Yonah Mountain (one of my
favorites) and the more low key, Habersham Winery.
When you first open the bottle of Scarlett, it’s a good
red. It has some tannin, its full of
cherry and raspberry flavors, and it pairs nicely with burgers or steak. The downside of this Georgia wine is how
quickly it degrades in air. By the
second day, much of the traditional red wine flavors are replaced by a sweeter,
grape juice flavor. If you try to make
it last three days, it degrades even more.
However, it’s worth the stop at the winery in Helen (or the
tasting room in Dahlonega). Pick up a
bottle and pour it with friends on a summer night. It won’t be a big, flashy red wine they’ll
talk about forever, but it will be enjoyed and you’ll be supporting Georgia’s
agriculture while you do it.
