Ancient Peaks: Zinfandel

I’ve had a sinus cold for almost three weeks and haven’t been able to blog.  Thankfully, I like to stay ahead.  I write my blogs out for several weeks at a time to make sure I don’t fall behind in the event I can’t, you know, smell the wine.  Thank goodness my sense of taste hasn’t been disturbed though this allergy-initiated nightmare, just my sense of smell.

And, no, I don’t have COVID.  (A sentiment I’ve had to repeat dozens of times the last couple of weeks – every time I sneeze or cough thanks to the sinus issues.)  Just a stuffed-up nose that doesn’t seem to want to go away.

This wine is defined by its soil – a mix of shale and volcanic blend that give the wine depth with bold flavors.  It’s fruit forward: blueberry and raspberry, with notes of pepper and oak on the end.  It has a medium mouthfeel – there are tannins to be found, making the wine not as smooth as it could be.  To me, the lack of smoothness goes back to the rocks in the volcanic soil.

This isn’t my favorite Zinfandel.  It’s lighter than some of the others I like with a porous quality to the overall roundness of the wine.
